    not solved for me either...my network controller isn't even "N" compatible switching to strictly "B" or "G" mode does nothing either neither does changing the channel.

    Your problem has nothing to do with N speed as you stated.

    de-activate the STA (wl) driver

    Install b43-fwcutter and the firmware for the Broadcom low power chip set (it has LP in the name).

    You can do that from Synaptic after doing a search on bcm you should see the b43-cutter and the firmware. Be sure to read the description of the firmware and make sure it is for the Low Power chipset.

    Had the same problem after upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10 and I think I found a way how to deactivate the n-channel at your wifi card! Now my wireless network speed is normal again! So it worked!

    Code:
    sudo rmmod iwlagn
    sudo modprobe iwlagn 11n_disable=1

    I have HP Compaq 6710b and I have discovered that when I change encryption from WPA2 to WEP it works fine. The only problem is that WEP is not secure.

    Thanks. Works on my Sony Viao but I need to enter the same commands at every machine reboot. Any permanent solution?

    hmm, i have a thinkpad z61t and my wireless works normal, like always.
