    Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot!

Today is the big day, and the team at Canonical have got another new Ubuntu release out the door! They all deserve a big round of applause!

System76 customers are clear to upgrade to the new release. For users performing a fresh installation, you're free to download the CD image and upgrade as soon as you're ready.

If you want to perform an online upgrade to 11.10, then, as always, we recommend you wait a week or two to let the load on the servers cool down. When the servers are heavily loaded, the chances of completing an upgrade successfully drop, and that can mean data loss!

Nevertheless, we'd recommend backing up data just in case. It's always better to be safe.

Full upgrade instructions are available at this knowledge base article.

    Re: Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot!

I gave it a try on my Serval Pro w/ SSD, and do-release-upgrade failed hard with an exception, choking on something in /etc/fstab, it looks like. I have not changed the install, fstab configuration, or added/replaced any drives, so this should be set as it was at factory....just a warning/(and request for ideas to get past the problem) from a s76 user who had to cancel the upgrade process...

    here's the exception:

Also, I'm not completely sure that I reverted the upgrade process entirely. I simply ran vi search/replace in /etc/apt/sources.list, replacing oneiric where-ever I found it. Anything else I should have done?

That should be fine to revert the change.

In the future, you should wait a week or so before attempting to upgrade to a new release. If you want to upgrade on release day, we recommend doing a fresh-install.

    Re: Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot!

My upgrade seemed to go well, but I can't boot into Oneiric. Boot hangs on "Stopping System V runlevel compability".

If I Alt-F6 into a command prompt and attempt to log in, here's what I get:

    Code:
    libindicate-ERROR **: Unable to get session bus: Command line 'dbus-launch --autolaunch=78bf8294bb46d639695a66e500000009 --binary-syntax --close-stderr" exited with non-zero exit status 1: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n
Not sure where to go from here.

You are all much braver than I am-upgrading right at distribution. I am just thrilled that I got my first program (kindle reader for PC) to work via wine!

    Re: Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot!

    Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.'

and now it does this everytime i open update manager..... so would an upgrade by cd work better? i want to upgrade BUT I DONT WANT A FRESH INSTALL.... because i currently have too much to backup......

also when i upgrade will my update manager be fixed from saying that everytime i open her?

    Re: Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot!

With the release having just started today its never a good idea to do a online upgrade, DVD would always be the better option.

Also as System76 has stated -

"If you want to perform an online upgrade to 11.10, then, as always, we recommend you wait a week or two to let the load on the servers cool down. When the servers are heavily loaded, the chances of completing an upgrade successfully drop, and that can mean data loss!"

This isn't just a good warning its a law to live by with all Ubuntu releases.

Oh try 'apt-get clean' and see if that will clear the error.

    Re: Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot!

i finally got upgraded, it failed to upgrade like 5 times and a fresh instal took forever and then FROZE at installing system at the end when i rebooted it booted into ubuntu but when i go to install the system76 driver it says that i need a cd-rom and i installed off a flash stick does this mean that i NEED to make a cd-rom or wtf?

I'm currently installing my nvidia driver the old fashioned way and hoping everything goes fine... I probably messed up somewhere and the 5 failed attempts and 3 hours of waiting has caused me to delete multiple bad words in this post

if i install fresh again............................................. ................... i swear im unplugging the internet because the what feels like an hour of "downloading packages".... I love Ubuntu but the installer this time around.................

I'm getting the same error as CheeseKiller. The
    Code:
    sudo apt-get clean
didn't help. I guess that is what I get for trying to upgrade right away. Next time I'll read the forums first.
