    Stop unwanted start-up programs

Have just upgraded to Oneiric 11.10 no problem , however my low end PC seems to be having a bit of a struggle . Is there any way to stop unwanted background programs being loaded at start-up to ease the load on my RAM ? I'm sure that in previous versions you could do this in " preferences " , but can't seem to find this feature in 11.10 .

You can deselect some applications that you don't want loaded during startup in Startup Applications. To access this, press the Super key (Windows key, that is) and type Startup Applications.

Make sure you uncheck those that you really don't need.

Biggest thing to remove is "Compiz" that does a whole bunch of "window dressing" without affecting function at all.

You remove "Compiz" by choosing "Unity-2D" at logon.

I preferentially use "Unity-2D" even on the pc's that will run "Unity-3D" because I don't like fuzzy see thru images and way out of focus windows.

Compiz even chews up pc cycles and memory running in the background when I've got full screen applications up, and anything Compiz is doing is useless and not even visible.
