You can install gnome-tweak-tool from the Ubuntu repo by using Synaptic Pkg Mgr. You can get the theme extension and more HERE.

Hey,
- Open a terminal
- Paste this:sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool
- Wait for it to install
- You can find it in your programs and click it, or launch it from the terminal command line (sudo gnome-tweak-tool)

The method that worked for me is discussed in this post: http://www.webupd8.org/2011/10/offic...xtensions.html
Basically, make sure your gnome shell is up to date (should be 3.2) and add the user-theme extension from the Webupd8 PPA.
In the future, extensions.gnome.org should allow for easy installation of themes, but for now, the webup8 PPA has worked well for me.
thank you guys, i already had the tweak tool but was looking in synaptic for the user-theme extension, surprised its not included there, got it now all sorted thanks

does anyone else notice this problem, if i try to use a transparent theme then i can see the nautilus menu bar for the desktop behind gnome-shells top-bar (see attached screenshot, on the left it merges with the activities tab) , is there a way to disable the menu bar for the desktop?
