using wireshark to scan lan traffic help

Hey, maybe i am wrong. But i thought if i installed wireshark on my computer that when i ran it i would be able to sniff lan traffic that didnt have anything to do with my computer.

i set the filter to http and connected my phone to my lan, i then browsed the web on my phone, expecting wireshark to sniff the traffic between my router and phone but it didnt.

If i visit a site on the computer running wireshark, then it logs the http activity perfectly.

Can wireshark not eavesdrop on lan traffic i.e my phone and the router or my mums laptop and the internet??

ah thanks for that. It makes sense that you wouldnt see it, but in network security you always see things about eavesdropping on your connection, and i know firefox has an addon that can copy someone elses cookies if they log into a site on the same network.

now im not sure how that works.
