Basicly my best computer died,a duel core lappy with 512 dedicated memory graphic's daughter board. (windows/ubuntu dual boot)
Secondly wife is using yet older lappy with ATI RADEON 9600 and single core mostly web surfs and plays facebook flash games.
Thirdly noticed that usually the computers are not being used to highest protentual. aka usually waiting for user input.
My personal main resource hog is SecondLife
So, my inquiry is thus
If I got a new computer, and installed both a Desktop Environment GNOME and either a LTSP or PERCEUS server. How much performance hit would it be once a thin/hybrid client logged in??
Two setup's come to mind.
One) Desktop/Server at wife's desk since she's home more and therefore on it more. And thin client at my desk.
(Pro only one machine drawing power till I get home and power up and log in with client. Con - When I go play SL, lots of video data has to be sent. Maybe lag issues if get into more MMORGs games like Diablo 3 when it comes out)
Two) Desktop/Server at my desk and wife on a client.
(Pro - Less Video transfere needs for intense games. Con - Both machines have to be on for usage)
Also would 10/100 speed network card work between server and client(s) if only between 1 and 3 clients? Or I need a gigabit card?
I'm figuring main choke point is going be between LAN and DSL provider anyway.
