I have tried your advice but still just get a black screen, I can hear Ubuntu starting to run...I hear the music tone...but I did try tapping the up arrow key....tapping the up arrow key and nothing happens..system just continues normal boot but has a black screen

Okay just did something awesome.

So far the fglrx-updates are working the best.

I installed compiz config settings manager

ran it

go to opengl settings

disable sync to vblank

enable tear free in catalyst config

restart X

soooooooooo much better

you have to do it quickly. very quickly.

try holding the shift key during boot.

I had the same problem when I first installed 11.10. my workaround to this was plugging my computer into my tv via the hdmi out. Then I was able see everything and activate the drivers. Once they were activated it started working for me right away.

I just tried that and now videos and 3D graphics play a lot smoother than before. Thanks!

Just installed Catalyst rev. 12.1
It works fine and performance seems to be further improved.

I have this feeling that everything reacts quicker after the upgrade, not only the graphics.

It does feel better, but regarding HD movie playback, still much worse than Windows

Now that 12.1 has 'production support' I wont be surprised to see it in the precise repo's soon.
