My wife has a Sony Vaio and I just loaded 11.10. It would not suspend at all! To fix that I added acpi_sleep=nonvs in /etc/default/grub. Ran update-grub and voila! Works like a champ. Tried that on my amd hardware... no such luck lol.

    Switch those 2 around lol

In fact... try having them both disabled and see if it helps.
Yeah, Yeah, I never was good on the details.

Can't wait to try out 12.04! Unfortunately, I need some degree of stability, so I'll wait a bit until at least a later beta, if not the actual release. Alpha's just a bit too risky for me. (See attention-to-details post above)

lol I went back to precise. Lots of crashes...

BUT on the good side, much better performance! Oh and suspend works everytime

Good to hear, i'm looking forward to it, living without suspend are driving me nuts. I did try going back to 3.0.0-14. I had suspend working fine there, but i doesn't now, so i suspect the AMD driver to be coursing it. also i now have sporative lockups where every thing freezes up.

So, are you suggesting that 12.04 will fix the high CPU usage from the graphics when playing back video, or just that Suspend will no longer be broken? To have both would be ... AMAZING!!

I would say there is a very good chance you will be happy with the results

At least a direction with which driver works best would be much appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Edit:

I have tried reinstalling the driver but when the proprietary driver is installed it will not load past the splash screen on a normal boot. I have to back into recovery, force an uninstall of the AMD / ATI proprietary driver before I can get back into a DE.
Same issue here, not loading past splash screen. I think this could be a bug.
Edit: btw I installed according to this tutorial:http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Debian#Removing_Catalyst.2Ffglrx

after you install the driver it is very important to open a terminal and

    sudo aticonfig --initial

this will replace the xorg.conf file with the correct one.

I did that it didn't give any errors.
After that all I get is a scrambled splash screen. Then I have to go to recovery mode and tell it to make a default configuration. because if I get it to make a configuration for my hardware I get a scrambled splash screen.
    A bug?

    so just to double check

you downloaded the driver from here

    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...eon_linux.aspx

Then you made the file executable

    chmod +x amd-driver-installer-12-1-x86.x86_64.run

    Then ran it

    sudo ./amd-driver-installer-12-1-x86.x86_64.run

You chose express, let it install

    ran sudo aticonfig --initial

    rebooted

    ... just checking.........
