Cannot remember old password and home directory cannot be found on drive

    Hi,
I have a Ubuntu OS (10.04) installed on a spare PC which I have in the past, used as a home webserver/fileserver.
Unfortunately I cannot remember the old password and I would like to retrieve some files before I rebuild the system.

I hopped to be able to chroot into the hard drive and change the password, however when mounting the hard drive from a Live CD I can only see a grub folder and a bunch of abi-2.6-xxx-generic-pae and System.map-2.6-xxx.generic-par files.

There isn't any hidden directories or a home directory either.

The system loads correctly when the box boots up and is reachable via ssh/ apache.

What are these files and does this mean the system is encrypted?
Is there any way I can get access to the home directory?

    Any help is much appreciated.
