Jupiter Applet is Great. What a difference.

Just wanted to share my experience with the Jupiter Applet, designed to easily adjust performance/system settings on laptops and netbooks.

I've been using it for about 4 days now..
and I've noticed some great changes to my laptop since then!

Here is what Jupiters site says about Jupiter..

Jupiter is a light weight power and hardware control applet for Linux. It is designed to improve battery life of a portable Linux computer by integrating with the operating system and changing parameters of the computer based on battery or powered connection.

Additionally, Jupiter provides quick access to some of the commonly needed hardware controls like screen output and resolution, WIFI, and bluetooth.

If you use Linux on a portable computer, let Jupiter take the effort out of going mobile.

Jupiter is an applet designed for netbooks and laptops that you can use to switch between maximum and high performance and power saving mode, change the resolution and orientation, enable or disable the bluetooth, touchpad, WiFi and so on.

Jupiter doesn't work by default in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot due to some Mono changes, but you can now use it thanks to a "hack" provided by WebUpd8 reader mtron.

I own an IBM Thinkpad Z61t, which is about 5 years old.
It runs great, and is very fast..
But it often gets quite hot when running things that require a lot from the CPU's.

My battery is also not as good as it once was.. (only at 62% capacity now)

Usually, when Im playing a movie or something...
(or the few times Ive played Vendetta online)
my temps will often climb to above 70 degrees Celsius.
I've even watched get above 80 in the past. lol

My battery typically only lasts on a full charge for about an hour and a half, maybe 2 if Im lucky.

But since Ive installed Jupiter,
I have it set on "Power Saver"..

and no matter what I do, or run...
My temps are not climbing above 55 C or so, and that's with my CPU's maxed out.

My battery has also been lasting a good 2 and half , to 3 hours on a full charge!

Im not sure exactly what Jupiter is doing in/to my system..
But I'm amazed by the outcome!

I really didn't expect much from it..
and I certainly didn't expect this much from it!

So anyone who has issues with heat, or with battery life..
Do give Jupiter a try!

There are quite a few things it can do I guess..
But my main focus was the heat and battery life...
and the change to both has been awesome!

Anyone else using this, and experiencing similar changes?

The bottom of my laptop is actually cool to the touch now!
which it never was, even when running just a browser and music player.

Very, very cool!
Got to be one of the greatest pieces of software Ive installed in my 2 years of using Ubuntu!

Oh yeah!

Also...

The settings seem to stay put, even if Jupiter applet is not running!
I don't have it set to run at startup...
But that hasn't made a difference at all.

It seems to keep working its magick once installed and settings chosen.
Whether it's actually running in my sys. tray or not.

How cool is that!?!? lol

The Jupiter applet itself is just a simple configuration GUI for the underlying trigger that I inject into the operating system.

Technically, you can delete the Jupiter GUI applet, and Jupiter will still function once it is installed.

If you do that though, you won't have an easy way to change the configuration so I don't recommend it.

I do have a question..

I have tried to use the mono Jupiter icons that I got from github,
and I resized them to 24 x 24 px,
and followed the "readme" file..
But the icon still doesnt change.
It stays colored.

What did I do wrong? lol

You should be able to put them into your current icon path. For example, my icon path is /usr/share/icons/fuduntu-faenza so I would put them here:

/usr/share/icons/fuduntu-faenza/status/24/bolt3.png

Your path will vary slightly.

Probably not, but I have no idea how KDE is designed.

I installed v 0.0.50 too, and it works beautifully.

I have one issue however. My laptop's CPU is reported as running at 50500C in Power Saving mode, which is probably wrong as I do not have a hole melted through my leg.
