You can also try Bodhi Linux, which is quite lightweight.

I have been using Bodhi since last month. Since trying it out I have removed Ubuntu and replaced it with Bodhi. Both in my laptop and desktop. I find it much faster, and once I tried Enlightment (E17) I will never return to Gnome.

    Here are some desktop views.

All the programs I had on Ubuntu, I also have in Bodhi.

You can give Arch a try indeed. Very lightweight. If you're not familiar with Arch already I suggest to read the Beginner's Guide. Well documented.

I prefer Mint as my personal desktop OS. Its rather lightweight, simple to use and easy to navigate.
A young man once challenged me to hack his computer, i told him to stand by and promptly returned with an axe.

Xubu 10.04 runs awesomely on my old hand-me-down which is literally half of the OP's hardware.
Really? I once installed Xubuntu 10.04 on an old Compaq laptop, and it was very slow, and had trouble connecting to my wireless network. the install also degraded over time, like Windows does, so I re-installed it twice, then Gave up on it and installed Debian.
Say no to Microsoft. Say yes to open source.
