Can't login after update?

I have a ubuntu machine that is offline.
I just did an update online.first in over a month. Now I can't login.
No I did not forget my password.
Ubuntu 11.04 encrypted partition and encrypted home directory.

I am the only user on the machine.
Tried logging in from command line also.

I am thinking I am totally boned.

There was an error with a font package during the update but I did not think it was important.

Any hope?

8.04 reached "end of life", in may.

If you like the long term support releases, you could download, and install 10.04,

You can always boot to a liveCD and access that hard drive to retrieve data if necessary. You could also use the liveCD to do some disk checking of the problem system.

Thanks for the info.but it is not at all useful.
If you had read my post you would have noticed I said I'm on ubuntu 11.04 and everything is encrypted.

Which means I'm boned.
What I would like to know is why ubuntu lost my password.
That is a serious bug to the security minded.

I've recovered data with a live cd from unencrypted installs, but never attempted encrypted files.

Please have a look at this link.

Farther down, it describes how to manually retieve encrypted files.
