    GPU driver problem when booting

    So, I have that stupid problem and now it's getting really annoying.

    When I boot, it doesn't go to the login screen like it should. Instead, it goes in text mode and I have to login that way.

    Here's the procedure that I do to manage to start the login screen:
    - sudo service gdm stop
    - sudo sh <NVidia Driver>
    --> Accept the term and whatever then, the next screen it says that this driver is already installed and I can choose to quit the installation, so I do that (anyway, a full reinstallation doesn't solve the problem).
    - sudo service gdm start

    And then I have the login screen.

    I want to go directly to the login screen without have to do that again. It's clearly a waste of time because the (1) driver is installed already and (2) if I don't go in the installation, I cannot restart gdm, it won't work.

    So, how do I fix this ?

    Thanks

    W

    Re: GPU driver problem when booting

    I really don't know what to do!

    I have the last driver from nVidia... but even if I used the last version, it doesn't work at all!

    Please... help me! It's very annoying, particularly for something that has no good reason to happen because I don't need to fully reinstall the driver!

    He means to open this file: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
    Code:
    gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
    and add this line at its bottom: blacklist nouveau
    Then save and close the file, then either restart computer, or enter this command to remove this driver:
    Code:
    sudo rmmod nouveau
    (I assume you have nvidia driver to take its place)
    Varun

    Re: GPU driver problem when booting

    I'm no expert in graphics issue (not even an amateur troubleshooter), so my approach/suggestions may involve unnecessary and unhelpful steps. But I think the error-log is something that an expert would require too. So please post the contents of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

    Let's hope some experts find it interesting and jump in to help.

    Edit:

    Also, the outputs of following:
    Code:
    sudo lshw -C display
    lsmod
    Varun

    Re: GPU driver problem when booting

    Looks like either no expert noticed or none is interested at the moment, so I guess I'll have to try a few things myself.

    The date you noticed is the release date of X-server you are using (same as mine), not the date of the log itself. The log creation date is given in the 16th line (27th of Sept.), so it's quite relevant.

    Now as per the log, it seems you are using an xorg.config file:
    ....
    [ 1643.102] (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Tue Sep 27 12:28:57 2011
    [ 1643.103] (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
    [ 1643.103] (==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
    [ 1643.103] (==) ServerLayout "Layout0"
    [ 1643.103] (**) |-->Screen "Screen0" (0)
    [ 1643.103] (**) | |-->Monitor "Monitor0"
    [ 1643.103] (**) | |-->Device "Device0"....
    So please confirm if the xorg.config file exists in your /etc/X11 directory. If it is there, please post its contents.

    I am hoping either a simple editing of that file, or adding some boot parameter to the kernel boot line should solve the issue. Although it's weird why these things happen in the first place.

    And something just FYI- you can use the 'code' tags (# symbol) instead of 'quote' tags to make the output box look smaller (with a scroll-bar) (edit your above post to see the effect). It is recommended for any log or command output.

    Re: GPU driver problem when booting

    I have the exact problem since yesterday. X.org says: EE failed to load module "nv" (module does not exist,0). I reinstalled nvidia_current (and enabled it through jockey-text) but nothing seems to help.
