    Formatting external hard drive

I have a Iomega 1TB external hard drive. It is formatted on NTFS, and there are some windows files on it. I want to format about 100 gigabytes of it to ext4, but i cant seem to find out how without destroying the whole windows partition (I only need like ten percent of the hard drive)
Is there any way to do it? Preferably graphically, and on ubunut (but its fine if i have to do it on windows)
    I'm open to suggestions

With a Windows boot drive we usually suggest Windows MMC, but it is very limited and we only suggest it for shrinking and nothing else.

Gparted will work on NTFS partitions and we use it for XP or data partitions without issue. Just be sure to use the latest available some (now pretty old) did have issues but only on Windows 7 system partitions.

How many files are on it? Or really how much size? if it's not a lot, move the files to your hard drive, then open disk utility and create all the partitions you need and format them and then move the files back to the external. That would be the easiest route I think

I tried using gparted but this is what happens.
it shows icons that are suggesting that i cant do anything with it (see picture 1)
then when i hit properties it shows an error. (see picture 2)
is there any way to solve it?

A copy of the windows c drive (backup wont work on it for some reason) and its like 60 gigs.
And if it matters, the files are not defragged. should i just partition it with disk utility?
Also, how would i do it? sorry im not familiar with partitioning tools

Well first make sure you install that "ntfsprogs" or whatever it is that gparted says you need, then make sure the drive is not mounted. I'm pretty sure you can just go into disk utility and partition it there without even moving the files off of it
