The developer summit will happen in three weeks.

There will be some spec writing in the meantime. That means a lot of discussion. Can there be a temporary forum section for spec discussions? I think this would be a useful feature for development to interface with the forum community.

Propose the spec for discussion at a meeting. Launchpad keeps track of meetings held by the Launchpad and Ubuntu teams. Currently, the only meeting registered is UbuntuBelowZero. You can propose your spec for that meeting agenda using the "Add to Meeting" menu item (top right) on the spec page in Launchpad. Proposals are evaluated the management team; if they can be adequately discussed at the meeting, they will be accepted.

Gather a community around your specification. Don't assume that people will find it. Announce your spec on [MAILTO] ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com and on #ubuntu-devel. Get people to subscribe to the spec as interested parties. If you have someone who wants to implement it, make them the assignee of the spec. NB, don't make someone the assignee unless they have agreed or you are funding them in some way. The better the community you can build around your idea, the greater the chances that it will be implemented soon, and well."
Maybe the forums should be mentioned there. Although not hardcore develpment, maybe the forums should be mentioned on that page as part of "building the community". Maybe not every spec would benefit from forum input, but perhaps there will be a few? Perhaps there will be some specs that will come up that will involve (or benefit greatly from) the more user-oriented forum public?
If there were a forum section that could appear at the beginning of each release cycle which could host some of these discussions (and then shut down after the summit was over), I think that would rock.
Kind of like the way fridge discussions can happen on the forums only this would stem from the launchpad specs that the author would want to discuss on the forums. Maybe using the same technique, too? Forum users would be able to easily contribute to development in the ways that they can.
Also, this could cut down on a lot of questions, if the development process was more visible to the forums users.
Would that be do-able in terms of hacking the forum layout and managing the section for a few weeks?
