Making the Dash work for its place in Unity

Why doesn't the dash pull results from Thunderbird, Tomboy, Firefox, photoalbums, contacts etc. I recognised that the Dash was limited in 11.04 but there seems to have been no real development in its performance since then. It currently really has very limited functionality compared to other search engines.

To get a terminal command to put its output into a file use this format

I was under the impression it was meant to do that, search firefox bookmarks and such?

I find it odd some of the regular stuff missing from search results.
For example, I start typing "word", as if searching for a word processor and it brings up NO results, despite both LO Writer AND Abiword being installed.
