Nope. One time I went to a hotel that had pay-to-use Internet, so I plugged in my grandpa's Sprint cell adapter and after a few initial setup dialogs it was working OOTB.

I have been in Australia the past 3 months using an optus pre-paid mobile broadband usb stick, no problems at all...

Re: Mobile Broadband with ubuntu ?

Mobile broadband can be a bit flaky regardless of OS.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.

It worked for me. The hardware was some generic Huawei 3g dongle given out by the provider. I just plugged it in, it asked me for the pin, it established the connection, and when I opened the browser, a page came up explaining how to set up the connection properly, which I did.

Most 3G dongles work without problems

BUT All 3g Wlan dongles work flawlessly.
That is because ubuntu sees those 3g dongles as just another normal wlan-internet

I can tether my phone just fine. But my carrier seems to think I should pay more for that capability so I don't do it.

I have an EVDO usb dongle, it works fine since 9.10 although in 11.04 I have to plug it out and plug it back in after login otherwise Network-Manager can't detect it.

I hope that this small regression will get fixed in 11.10.

Before 9.04 I had quite a few problems. Since then - flawless and fast. With Huawei devices, ZTE devices and Android HTC phone tethering.
