Re: Too many primary partitions on new HP laptop?? Please help!
If you have a version of Win7 that is working well for you, and you later want to restore it ... save yourself the trouble of having to reinstall everything from scratch by making your own image backup which you can then later restore and get what you have right now ...
That means that if you follow my suggestions, you can safely remove the Recovery partition and STILL have a way of restoring Win7 later, should you need to.
So, the way to do this is as follows:
1) Download and install the FREE version of Macrium Reflect (MR) in Win7
2) Use the MR option to create a Linux Boot Cd
3) Use MR to image off your Win7 setup to an external drive or to DVDs (a drive, or large enough USB stick, would be better).
Boot from the MR Linux Boot CD and confirm that the Restore operation can see the saved image files -- by connecting the external drive or USB stick, or inserting the proper DVD -- but do NOT actually run the Restore.
However -- and this is important -- if you decide that removing your Recovery partition does not give you enough room for Ubuntu, then BEFORE you do the MR imaging, use the Win7 Disk Utility function to shrink the Win7 OS to make more room. And then, reboot into Win7 a couple of times to allow its filesystem to make the necessary adjustments. Only THEN, make the image backup using MR.
Ubuntu 20.04, Mint 19.10; MS Win10 Pro.
