    How Do I Install My Video Card Drivers?

    I'm running ubuntu 11.04 64-bit.

    I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 video card.

    I went under "additional drivers" and actived the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver, but it says it's "not currently in use".

    I also tried downloading the driver from NVIDIA's website, but instead of installing, it opens in a text document and I get the message: "Could not open the file home/razor/Downloads/NV...A-Linux-x86_64-280.13.run.

    gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding.
    Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
    Select a character encoding from the menu and try again."

    Please help.

    That seems to be a bug.

    In order to make sure you are running the Nvidia driver:

    Backup your X config file first:
    Code:
    # sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
    Then run the Nvidia X Server Setings:
    Code:
    $ gksudo nvidia-settings
    Select X Server Display Configuration (left). In the right press 'Save to X Configuration File'. Restart your machine.

    Tell us how it goes,
    Regards.

    Re: How Do I Install My Video Card Drivers?

    Upon trying to do that, I received this error:

    Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'!

    Re: How Do I Install My Video Card Drivers?

    Interesting. It be may corrupted. Delete it (actually rename it), so you can take out of the equation:
    Code:
    $ sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.error
    Hope it helps,
    Regards.

    Alright, I've followed the instructions in your first post, but nothing has changed.

    Re: How Do I Install My Video Card Drivers?

    Well, if you are referring to the message on Additional Drivers, that will remain until the bug is fixed (the bug is related to displaying correctly what is being used).

    To make 100% sure you are using the nvidia driver, post the result of this command:
    Code:
    $ grep -i nvidia /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    It should look something similar like this:

    My mistake, this is the good one (also fixed above).
    Code:
    $ grep -i nvidia /var/log/Xorg.0.log
