I'd guess that's because posts not in support forums don't count. This is first and foremost a support forum.

Indeed, as far I know, the server does not keep count of the number of posts made by a user in non-support forums.

I think a time limit would also be a good idea. If that's possible, that is.

I'd yhink that there are dormant spam accounts - the current norm seems like a good bet

I've seen spam hidden in smilies - hanging about and then going back doesn't seem like a hard tactic

Maybe you should add:*

NewUserX, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
Your user account has less than 50 posts,*
your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page,
Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

I'll go have a look where that piece of text is hidden. vB AdminCP can be .. convoluted at times

It is possible.
We've had what we call "spammers teams". Not sure if there is only one individual behind these, or several, but they create accounts that they keep dormant and revive sometimes as long as a year later. Some of us have developed spider senses to hunt these down, now we can prevent the behavior.

So it is really a balance between annoying you and annoying them.
The forum is a resource for you to use, your presence and contributions are valued. We do not like the way spammers use the forums traffic and, in the end, use your presence

I know how we can become attached to the account look and how it is important to recognize someone. Once the Staff swapped avatar, titles and sigs, everyone was so confused! Even myself! It is part of our identity that we are -transiently- taking away. You'll get it back

Sorry I did not see your post when I quoted the ones above. That is exactly what I was talking about. We even had spam links hidden in dots
