Ubuntu server 10.04 headless - remote gnome

    What I'm trying to do:
Have super awesome computer running all the time at home,
Connect to awesome computer with crappy laptop anywhere.

    What I have done:
    Fresh install from CD,
Install java-jre (from .bin it sits in my home directory)
used server with a java server program for a month
<laptop dies abit more on the inside, becomes less usable.>
install openssh-server, set it up, sets up router.
    follows: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1477909
    install gnome
    did "update-rc.d -f gdm remove"
set the vncserver.user DISPLAY to 0 and 1 multiple times, no luck (currently at 0)

    What I have now:
    A awesome computer with a keyboard, and un-plugged CRT-monitor.
When monitor is plugged in it keeps switching between on/off (makes noise each time, so unplugged)
no CLI on monitor when it is plugged in and on, (I think I did see a mouse cursor at one point, but I might have tweaked that away)
    SSH works.
vinagre to it's ssh works but only shows a CLI, tried startx, start gdm (seems to stop instantly now since monitor is unplugged)

    Idea in afew months:
use a netbook to connect up to the awesome computer, have awesome netbook.

Sorry if post isn't fully clear... (lack of sleep, bed after submit = clicked)

I'll be doing some tests with other methods tomorrow (fresh ubuntu 11.04 inside a virtual box, on the crappy laptop at office (I think office lan blocks ssh server? got timeout error on my last test with a serv in a VB while there))

please give any info that could help me or help you to help me.
