I had the same problem. Then I started searching the internet and came across your problem. Then I read, you may have uninstalled something and that may have done it. Well I just put a fresh install of Natty 11.04. When I was done I removed some things I didn't need. Somehow attached to something I removed, I guess I agreed to remove Ubuntu-Desktop (1.220). I went back into Ubuntu Software center and typed in Ubuntu-Desktop and re-installed it. That is what fixed the problem. You will also end up re-installing the items you may have removed before, but if you decide to uninstall, look out for Ubuntu-Desktop and don't make the mistake again. I hope this helps you or anyone else with the same problem.
