HowTo: Windows (XP) on Ubuntu with VMWare Server

Hi, I installed using your script and I think it worked. I am installing on intrepid 8.10 and it did not create a menu link so I terminaled "vmware" and it opened a login page in firefox. it is asking for my login name and password; I've no idea what login name it wants, I never created one when compiling vmware. Any ideas?

Login: root
Password: your root password (the one you use for sudo)

I am sure I typed it in correctly. I use the same sudo password as my keyring password and that is OK so it hasn't changed. I also just tried a sudo gedit command and the same password worked fine.

rerun vmware-config.pl and set the administrative user to be your normal login.

(The only other alternative is to set a root password so that you can log in as root. Ubuntu doctrine considers this to be Bad (tm) so you won't find any instructions for doing so on this site.)

It's because vmware server console isn't a program anymore.

However, if you add a menu item that uses the command "vmware" it will create a link (like a shortcut in windows) that will load your browser pointing to the right web address.

Got it, thanks. Ran Windows setup but then messages came up saying not enough resources. It's a pretty old PC so I'll have to try it on a newer one. I was using it as a test case before I mucked up my production PC.

You need the version numbers from uname -r in the command as well, e.g.

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.28-11-generic

That's why the howto uses the command that substitutes the results of uname -r in it.

i tried that and got "the newest version of linux headers is already installed" (something like that heh)

then i used --reinstall, it reinstalled, and when running vmware-config.pl i get:

your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)?

i type yes, and the following message appears:

i press enter, it tries to do something, and at the end:

I have the same problem as vdfritz with trying to run vmware in jaunty... Any input would be appreciated!!! I can't use VMWare right now
