Cannot Dismount External Hard Drive

Hi all,

First off, I love Ubuntu. I decided to move to Linux because I wanted something new and different, and I was willing to learn it. I said bye to Vista, and am now thoroughly enjoying this. I'm reading a lot and educating myself on it. Enjoying all of it.

Most of the things I've encountered, I managed to solve myself. But these are two recurrent issues:

1:
When I mount my external hard drive to TrueCrypt, I can't dismount it. It says device is busy. I can't even eject it from right-clicking the icon.

I have no trouble dismounting my 8GB USB through the same method, using it for the same tasks.

2:
How do I pin my own created folders to the launcher? I like having a clean desktop, so most of the time I just want to go through the launcher. But it seems I can't pin anything other than apps.

I like having a clean desktop too. And I don't know exactly what you mean by "launcher"

If you're talking about one of the panels, you just drag and drop the folder there.

If you're using unity, and you're talking about the thing on the left with the big icons, I have no clue.

Can you unmount your HDD via Disk Utility?

I think you also need to power it down before disconnecting Drive.

@ jfed - yup, the thing on the left with the larger icons.

@ Cat - just tried and it won't let me. Says device is busy/in use. And it's not really.

PS: this is Ubuntu 11.04.

I find sometimes you just have to shut off the computer when that happens, and if you're not transferring anything, sometimes you can still unplug it though.
