Graphics Card help. Radeon

Hello, I got a new hp DV6 and have been having trouble with it. I got it about a month ago and I'm not sure if the graphics card running properly. I tried playing alien arena on it and it was very slow and the frame rate was horrible. I ran glxgears to see where I was at

~$ glxgears

approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.

300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.943 FPS
301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.141 FPS

I'm kind of new at this but I have see some other people running in the hundreds and thousands.

If anyone could help or show me how to get it working that would be great,

I think I kinda know what the problem is, my computer has the intel card and the Radeon card. problems switching between the two
