Here is a list, some brands have more info than others:

It's not all that up to date though.

Re: Looking to buy ubuntu compatible laptop

I just purchased my third laptop, a Lenovo ThinkPad T420, on which I'm installing Ubuntu 11.04, so far without any problems. My previous laptop was an IBM ThinkPad T42, which also ran Ubuntu versions 8.10 through 11.04 without difficulty. My first laptop (in 1996) was also an IBM ThinkPad.

Every time I've decided to buy a laptop, I've surveyed the field and have always wound up choosing a ThinkPad, because they have consistently offered a mechanically excellent piece of machinery, with consistently good performance and excellent reliability.

There are a number of threads in these forums that discuss the installation of Ubuntu on the T420. I'd suggest that you read some of these threads. In general, the experience seems to be that the basic installation is straightforward, but that there are a number of tweaks that can be made to improve performance.

My T420 cost me about US$1,100, but you can go up and down from that price depending on the options you choose.

I quite like the think pad, can you recommend which one specifically? I'm gonna go look at those

EDIT: Might get an X1, Opinions?

The T420i modified to have a 1600x900 display looks like it would be my choice. However, the US site at least does not offer it with Linux of any kind.

Edit: Maybe also the 9-cell battery instead of 6-cell. Possibly the SSD instead of HD. Possibly 3-year warranty.

Edit2: Their web site is overly complicated and the customization interface ceases to function after a while.
