Re: Mogwai (aka Linux Mint Sid)

Ok well its looking better now upto localazing thunderbird and Firefox

    Installing bootloader

    configuring bootloader

ok reboot time .... all done for install

wow ..... nice bootloader too ...

fast boot .... and a gdm login ... screen too

Ok first thing what do we do load up the Nvidia-Current drivers ?

as this is bizarre the screen keeps flashing on and off ..... on for 5 sconds off for 1 second

The version here already has build dependancy problems ..... as soon as I try adding Nvidia-xconfig
its asking me to fix dependancy problems .......... will sort them out

ok - not sure if this is the right way to go but am sorting out the dependancy problem with
    a dist-upgrade ..... see where it takes me ...

its early enough on to re-install if it does not work out ok ,,,,,,.

You can use the smxi script to install the drivers, if you select the beta you'll get 280.11 today.

Not sure about the flashing screen, that's when you logon to the desktop?

( its doing the flashing constantly ..... on the desktop screen .... never seen anything like it before )

Where is the script ...... ?

if you can supply a link I have 2 computers going and can quickly transfer from one to the other

I am already in the process of distribution upgrade .... but could stop it if needs be ..... 45% at moment

what do you think .... ?

Re: Mogwai (aka Linux Mint Sid)

Ok doing that ...... 3 mins to go to download the lot .....

well the desktop and the speed it works is good ..... but the flashing screen is weird ....

    ,,,, this is the Nvidia 6300 ...

ok pre configuring packages ...... now a long wait unpacking and installing them

Processing them now ..... all the graphics drivers seem to have loaded in and its going well

but will need to make a decision whether to risk rebooting ,,,,,,, or do as much as possible while
    we have a desktop ......

as 891 Meg of updates is no small task .... but it will be totally up to date ,,
and hope fully will be free of problems ,,,,

ok kernel its loaded in is 2.6.39-2-686-pae ///

need headers and the nvidia drivers ..... loading before reboot ....

Oh yes looking good now ..... no flashing after reboot - looking good 48 mins to install 890 Meg of compressed data
pretty good for a single processor ...

The thing is are there any dependency problems now .... ?

Now we can work .... its totally uptodat and clean .... and is this smooth and fast too ..... love it ...

So to the Instructions ..... thread 1 .....

but before this ..... make sure your Graphics Divers are up to date .... 1360 x 768 .... ( for me my resolution on the desktop ).
    so what do we need
    Nvidia latest
    ............

Synaptic add ..... this .... it pulls in all the Nvidia requirements too ......
    nvidia-xconfig

    also add
    nvidia-settings

The graphics drivers may be best set up before we go into testing ..... ( but I did my upgrade in testing )
    add the headers too ....

    from root terminal run .....

    nvidia-xconfig

and then reboot .... see what we have !!!

Ok now to alter the /etc/apt/sources.list ....... from stable to testing

    sudo sed -i 's/stable/testing/g' /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
    deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
    deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org testing main non-free

ok then add the following ......

How to install GNOME 3 on Debian testing aka wheezy ( link to original )

If you want to try GNOME 3 before it has landed in testing, you’ll have to add unstable and experimental to your sources.list:
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian experimental main contrib non-free

ok this is where I decided not to follow the instructions ....

I Just added Gnome-shell and its dependencies ...... so if it all goes wrong for me here ..... follow the original link above .... in red

ok this is running from a terminal still ....... so now the final test ......
reboot ...... and run by itself !!!

We are in business ..... just needs customizing now ...... but it is smooth ,,,

ok 5:19 am time to sleep .....

You made that look quick & easy.

Mine looks & runs great but even with gdm 2.20 installed I can't get the dist.iso to load the desktop, though it does boot and gives a working terminal. It's an error loading Xserver, going to take a break from it for a while.

Re: Mogwai (aka Linux Mint Sid)

Ok what are the exact errors it was giving you ... ?

don't forget to disable the testing ppa's before loading in remastersys ,,,

as remastersys seems to do a lot of things before it actually starts ...... like upgrading parts
of the system and removing old files etc .....

I might have been lucky in the way mine installed ...... Debian Mint V10 .... for the upgrade to the
latest SID release ..... Gnome 3.0.2 .......... which is behind Ubuntu ...... Gnome 3.1.4
it was reporing on one System Monitor ....

The two problems I did have were not show stoppers .....

1 ...... The flashing screen ...... which luckily stayed on long enough for me to work
( was like 5 to 10 seconds on .......... then one second off / black )

2 ...... My system originally locking after going 3/4 of the way through ...... this I put down to either a bad Dvd or part of my Old 80 Gig hard drive being worn out ......

But its running gdm3 ..... now ...... guess later on today sometime I will try remastersys
and see if I get the same errrors as you do .....

if you have the exact error post it ..... please ......

For anybody else reading about this error we are discussing here - it has nothing to do with
Mint debian not working ( as Mint Debian runs very well indeed ) ....... but its to do with creating a brand new disk ......
Using remastersys to create it ...

Ok do I download remastersys and try it out ...... guess the answer to that has to be yes
will just see what the Debian version of remastersys is upto ...... ok there are a few versions of it ..... guessing the newest are at the top ......

Time to wake up and smell the coffee again ..... now thats an idea coffee or a energy drink
neither being very good for the body .......

Heat wave here again by the way .......

ok have a good day .... Sunday is a day of rest .... also monday is in France .... so I will
take a day off tomorrow and go for a bike ride .....

Looks like you are online now chuck ..... what version of remastersys do you want me to try .... ?

If we both use the same we should be able to work out if the errors are consistent ....

The other thing I always do is ensure the squashfs tools are loaded up too .....
