    Select preferences and set it to open with OpenJDK Java 6...

    Step 4 - Launcher
    Add a launcher on the desktop (right-click)
    Click on the image and locate minecraft.svg
    Name it Minecraft
    Set the location as the minecraft.jar file

    And your done so Try it out

    This has been the most help ive been able to find so far, but after everything is ran and the game starts running i get this.

    java: swrast/s_renderbuffer.c:588: map_attachment: Assertion `srb->Map' failed.
    Aborted (core dumped)

    And then of course it aborts and closes. Any help would absoloutly make my day!

    Hey guys, I did install Minecraft, but whenever i want to play offline it says : "not downloaded" and wont let me click the "play offline" button. Can anyone suggest what should i do?

    Thanks Kaldor, it opened and I was able to log in but its a black screen now. Grr. One more thing to fix now. HAha Gotta get it goin though. Any tips or knowledge would help. I have little experience with Ubuntu or linux but I'm learning quickly.

    Try the installer that's linked in my signature, it'll fix the blackscreen-issue for you. To run, first make the installer-file executable.

    yeah i could install it but this minecraft is kind of different, i can't choose the game mode (creative, survival) for example
