Step 1 - Files/Programs
Go to the Ubuntu Software Center and install OpenJDK Java 6...
Get minecraft.jar from here and place in you home directory.
Get minecraft.svg from the attachments at the bottom of this post and put it in the same place.
Step 2 - Terminal
Open the terminal and type: sudo bash
Enter your password (not the root one)
Then type: ls
Check if the files you added are there.
If they are type: chmod a+x minecraft.jar
This will make it run-able
Close the terminal
Step 3 - Open with
Go to the minecraft.jar file and right-click on it
Select preferences and set it to open with OpenJDK Java 6...
Step 4 - Launcher
Add a launcher on the desktop (right-click)
Click on the image and locate minecraft.svg
Name it Minecraft
Set the location as the minecraft.jar file
I have the installer downloaded, set to an execute file but that's as far as I can get it to go. When I double click it and choose, "run in Terminal" the terminal will pop up for a split second and the close instantly. Nothing happens after that. Any idea whats up?
Thanks Kaldor, it opened and I was able to log in but its a black screen now. Grr. One more thing to fix now. HAha Gotta get it goin though. Any tips or knowledge would help. I have little experience with Ubuntu or linux but I'm learning quickly.
Got it! YAY!

Click on the weird image to edit the launcher image
Add "java -jar /home/pathtominecraft.jar" in the next line, without quotes
For comments, add any words that you relate to Minecraft (for example, if you insert Herobrine, then type Herobrine in the dash, Minecraft will show up)
Press OK and Minecraft should be sitting in your dash. If it doesn't, either wait a while or relog
minecraft.jar is the launcher and the installer. In step 4 you should place minecraft.jar where you would like to launch it from. I place it on my Desktop. Next Download minecraft.svg. minecraft.svg is a icon picture. Right click on minecraft.jar > Properties > now click on the icon inside the Basic tab and navigate to your Downloads folder. You should see (minecraft.svg icon picture) select it then click open.
You should be good to go.
