    Re: MacBookAir4,1 & MacBookAir4,2 (MBA 2011) support

    Hi All,

I'm happily running 11.10 on a macbook air 4,2 and have been doing so for a while now but I'm tempted to do the auto-upgrade to 12.04 since I'd like better multitouch support (everything else works pretty damn well now) and maybe better battery life.

Has anyone done an upgrade and can recommend for/against doing so. I've run the 11.10. post-install scripts quite often (after updates, etc...) so I'm a little worried its modifications to the base configuration might conflict with the automated 12.04 update.

Normally I would just try it and sort out any issues but I'm on the road for another few weeks and I need my laptop to work so I'm weary of any issues...

I'd be grateful to hear of how others have weathered the update. Also is the macbook air better in 12.04? i.e. battery or trackpad.

I'm actually having issues with my trackpad/mouse freezing after the Mac is reawakened from Standby.

I don't feel as though the dock is working properly, either. However, that doesn't actually come off as an issue.

    Hi jrm,

this will install automatic upgrade to latest X builds:

    Code:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
After doing that, just go to update manager, 'check' for new upgrades, and install found upgrades.

Even though, with 12.04, I'm still facing issues with external monitor, so I still cannot recommend going to 12.04 completely ....

trackpad solution that worked for me was proved from following thread:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1952532

adding the following to /usr/lib/pm-utils/defaults worked like a charm

    SUSPEND_MODULES="bcm5974"

    Thank you

Another rather simple question to anyone - how do I type a ¨hash¨ ?
alt 3 doesn work. Is the hash hidden somewhere, or how do I remap a key?
(this is on a macbook air)

    Kindest regards
    James

Have you tried using the right-hand Alt key? Confusingly, the left key does something different.

    Thanks for the reply jonny.

Interestingly the right alt key gives me a great collection of many useful symbols in conjunction with the shift and cmd keys (thanks for the tip) but alas no hash.

Is there a simple way to remap a key?

    Kindest regards
    James

Which version is preferable for MBA Mid '11?

    64bit or 32bit?

For what it's worth I've been using the 64bit version on an 11'' mid 2011 MBA.

With 12.04 almost everything works out of the box, including the function keys for sound, screen brightness and keyboard backlights; the only exception is the touchpad freezing after suspending by closing the lid. There is an easy fix for that (see a few posts above) so no complaints. I'm not even sure whether the 32bit version will work at all.
