Updated to 11.04 Natty from Christian Edition 10.04

I was a little worried if this would work. I had built a little distro of CE 9.10 Netbook Remix and had been using it on my Acer Aspire One AOA150-1635 Netbook. So, since it's been about a year since an upgrade, I decided to take the plunge and see if I could successfully upgrade all this to 11.04. I was a little worried about Unity, but it has all work like a charm.

Everything seems to be working flawlessly and seemlessly. Dansguardian has been checked and is performing properly. Wine Christian Repository is functioning correctly. So all seems to be a go for anyone who wants to upgrade. I'll work on it a little more, but as for right now, it all seems to be good. Blessings.

Here's a look at Unity with CE on my Netbook.

I had no idea Ubuntu was so varied...blessings to the little project you've got here.

Thanks MG&TL. I'm not sure if I'm involved in a project, or whether I'm just a supporter of CE. I think the latter. I'm more of a 'tinkerer', I think. But I am glad I was a able to upgrade without any recognizable problems or bugs. If I get time, I might try to put together a little ISO image on torrent for 12.04. Not sure if I'm going to even bother with 11.10 until I look at it very carefully first.

Well, you could just work on the LTS releases and make them really good and bug-free, rather than try and re-hash your software every six months.

What's been tinkered with to produce the Christian Edition then?

Probably not a bad idea, MG&TL. LTS seem to be kinder and gentler in some ways. I'm not the kind of person who has the urge to upgrade very often anyway. But I don't know, I've heard some whining about Unity, and I'm sure there may be some justification in it, but the more I use unity the more I like it. I just wish it was a bit more customizable is all. That's about all I had to tinker with in the upgrade. Everything else is groovy cool.

Now I can get back to something a lot more important ...like working on my translation in Bibledit. Cheers.

    Good luck

Is bibledit like gedit or is it a different program altogether?

Bibedit (included in Ubuntu Software Center) is a USFM Bible editing and translation tool that was originally designed for Wycliffe and UBS members working abroad to not only have a text / formatting editor for Bible translation in local languages where they were stationed but to be able to produce bound copies and/or export them to other formats for hard copy or etext. It's a great little application. It wasn't on Jereme's original distro of Christian Edition, but can be easily added through Software Center.

I can't really live without it, to tell you the truth. It's about 90% of the reason I switched to Ubuntu in the first place.

Wow. I admit to being a little more Ubuntu than Christian, but what you've built here is really good. Maybe more people should build distros for (apologies) particular groups of people?

    A train-spotters' ubuntu!

Indeed. Since Jereme's first distro of CE in 2006 (?) it seems like all the special interest groups have jumped on the band wagon. CE really wasn't a distro built without a rhyme or reason, though. That's never been it's purpose. CE is about creating a distro for Christian families and users that will serve the needs of the church worldwide. Coming preloaded and preconfigured for a wide range of Bible applications and apps in the interest of the Christian community seemed to well serve a community looking for a good operating system and platform to use in churches and in the home. Christian Edition fit the bill for a lot of people.

Well, of course you also have multitudes of 'others'. The quacked out Ubuntu Satanic Version (dysfunctional and useless as it is, but which I'm sure always gets a hearty laugh amongst the damned, for whom it was designed ) is a fair example. Anywho. Yeah. There's a Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish, etc...version.

Basically, if you need a distro, there's probably one out there. And if there isn't, you can roll your own and probably find community support.

Yeah, it's fun. That's what makes Ubuntu Ubuntu.
