Question Stopping System V runlevel compatibility?

Hi there, I've just installed gNatty 11.04 on my machine the first thing I've done is to update via the terminal:

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
All seemed fine but when I've gone to restart it gets stuck at this message while booting:

    Stopping System V runlevel compatibility
I've reinstalled but the problem is still occurring, Any help?

Re: Stopping System V runlevel compatibility?

bump. this is a pretty serious problem, and I'm now getting it as well.

EDIT: so far, all things point to it being an graphics driver problem. will try this topic: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1744681

EDIT2: maybe change the topic title to something related to 'boot hang after upgrade'? 'Stopping System V runlevel compatibility' isn't directly related to the problem...

EDIT3: How does pressing Control+Alt+F1, logging in, and running 'startx' work for you?

But I'm running on an intel gma chipset. Would that still be a problem then?

it could possibly still be related to that... but maybe less of a chance now.

    have you tried running startx?

Yes I have, but it goes into fallback mode, I've also tried to downgrade xorg-server-video packages in Synaptic but it doesn't help. =\

Unhappy Re: Stopping System V runlevel compatibility?

Same for me. An hour ago Ubuntu (natty 11.04) asked me for a dist upgrade and I allowed it ... big mistake ... now Ubuntu hang at "Stopping System V runlevel compatibility".
So I switched to the recovery console and tried vesa and radeon driver instead of fglrx, but no change.
Starting the x-server by startx makes the machine crashing totally.
    My setup:
    ubuntu 11.04
    radeon 5570
    radeon 5450

Since 9.04 ubuntu gets form version to version more instable..

Re: Stopping System V runlevel compatibility?

    Same difficulty.

Last night I got the option to upgrade distribution from 11.04 to 11.10. So, I gave it that option and then staggered off to bed.

This morning I found the install stalled at installing a fonts package. I finally killed the graphical installer and rebooted to a busted install (as warned!). I moved to tty1, logged in, and called for the upgrades/updates.

After what seems like hours of pulling files, the machine reboots and hangs at the same error of "System V runlevel compatibility" being stopped. I switch to tty1 and issue "startx". The machine slowly loads Ubuntu Unity. So far, twice, I've been asked to enter my keyring password at this step.

I, too, am running an Intel chipset.

I get the same problem. The update manager prompted me to update and wasted 20 hours of my life

    I am really stuck.

Thanks a lot for any clue.

Cool Re: Stopping System V runlevel compatibility?

What a pain. Acer desktop aspire x1700

    11.10 upgrade stuck

Did the alt+ctrl+f1 then sudo startx worked -thanks

Then hit the upgrade center followed the partial upgrade.

On issue with the upgrade the netcomm wifi dongle lost connection

Must say thankfully the iPad connected to Internet found this how to forum.

I wish the upgrade would run a hardware test first..

I just hope all the computers I installed ubuntu have upgrades turned off..ahh
