If I order sky broadband, can I just plug it in or do I need to configure a couple of things?
I've had problems with other ISPs in the past.

I just couldn't connect and they don't support Linux.
It depends on the modem. Almost every modem as of now works with linux. You may not be able to use the proprietary software bundled with some modems, but with enough knowledge and information on the configuration, i guess you won't have problems using their service.
