    Question Lenovo ThinkPads and Ubuntu?

Some days ago I bought brand new Lenovo ThinkPad X200. For a 3 years old model I expected everything to work from beginning. In the shop I checked that with the a bootable USB flash with Ubuntu 11.04. Everything seemed to be ok. Later in the office when I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on the hard drive, the system started to overheat and the fans running all the time at ~3500 rpm. I decided to install Ubuntu 10.04.2 which is the current LTS release but it was the same. I tried also 32 and 64 bits versions - the same. I installed Linux Mint - the same. I installed Fedora 15 - again the same. Because I really like that ThinkPad X200, I decided to read which laptop from Lenovo X series works fine with Ubuntu. It happened that most of the owners of X series machines complained from the same issue. I also have Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 netbook which is fantastic machine and works cold and quiet without any problems. Is there a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop, not only from the X series, which works fine with Ubuntu Linux? Which one?

    Welcome to the forums!

Well, fan control is disabled by default for safety reasons. You are one of many to have this problem.

Take a look at this "thinkwiki" it is an article about fan control ... make sure to read all of it and do not ignore the warnings! (You want to have a working laptop after all )

Thank you but the info in the suggested article was not enough to make things work. Any detailed instructions for auto fan control on ThinkPad X200? Thank you!

I have a lenovo thinkpad r61 and works fine with all versions for Ubuntu from 8.04 to current 10.10, also 11.04 worked fine apart from 3d issues with nivida card.

My machine is on 24/7, at night on standby and has been like that for about 3 years

I use U10.04 24/7 on Thinkpad R500 for a month now, initially fan was on max speed, hdrive spindown and aam wasn't working at all, cpu was 100% (performance setting), wifi wasn't working also.

And now it is cool'n'quiet pad, so thinkwiki is truly the place to go with all linux (ubuntu) inconvenience on Thinkpads.

Go there, read again and try... try ... try again AND of course
    think what are you doing

In future I intend to buy one x220t, so I keep my fingers crossed for Your sucess with Your X200.

i'm not very knowledgeable about different lenovo model numbers, but anyone reading this thread may want to check this link before purchasing a thinkpad:

I have T400 which worked great with 10.04, 11 (disliked the Unity so I went back to 10.10) and been perfect with 10.10 for 'bout 2 years now. Almost everything worked out of the box (that is except the F. reader).

You could have just used "GNOME Classic" at login instead of Unity...
