    Persistent fan speed control.

I think I have found the problem to my Ubuntu laptop locking up, and it is most likely overheating. Is there any way to keep the CPU fan spinning at 100% constantly? I tried setting it up in the BIOS but it is an old laptop and I can't control it from there.

It could also be a loose heatsink or one where too much or not enough heat sink paste was applied. Since it's an older laptop, the heat sink paste could be dried out and not functioning well. Of course, the heat sink could be full of dust. You might be able to clean it be removing just the keyboard.

I have cleaned it out thoroughly, but I don't have any thermal paste on me now, is there a way to control fan speed and keep it persistent?

Nope, but I have completely disassembled it and cleaned it out.
