vga port there but system testing says "no"

I think this is why I can't get Compiz working. I have the VGA hardware output (I'm using it right now to view this screen!), and Compiz worked before, but now it isn't after an OS reinstall. When I do a system test of the monitor, the VGA is greyed out (as if not present).
    GEforce 7300
    Using 1280x1024 resolution at 75Hz.
I've looked here and elsewhere for an answer, without success.
    Video is laggy, too.
    New video card?

A new install will not automatically install the nvidia module. You have to do it yourself via Hardware drivers

I've tried uninstalling the "recommended" driver and installing one of the 2 others (173), with no effect.
    Is that what you mean?

Hi, yes you need the restricted or additional drivers installed for your card, also the 270 driver has issues, if you installed it uninstall it and use the older driver, I have to use the 173 driver, also are you still running 10.10?

    Yes. 10.10
I have the 3 Nvidia drivers available to me: "recommended", 173 and 96.
Are there others I could try?
