Ubuntu (all versions) fails to install on Dell

Have a strange problem. Tried to install Ubuntu on a Dell Optiplex 745. The following happens when I try to run a live CD version from a USB or from a CD and / if I just choose the "install" option.

The ubuntu icon is in the middle of the screen, but then there are just scrolling lines saying something about drivers. This continues indefinently and you have to reboot to stop it.

With Mint, the screen just goes blank and nothing happens when I tell it to install or run from the USB.

On the other hand, Fedora 15 installs and runs fine.

The only thing I can think of is the monitor connects via DVI and there is not a VGA port.

Could this be the problem? If so, how do I fix it. Fedora is nice but I prefer Ubuntu.

    Any help is appreciated
