    Recommend me an audio player

I'm looking at dumping Rhythmbox for a new player on my netbook. I've tried Banshee which seemed good, apart from being quite sluggish (mono?).

Rhythmbox is now dead development wise I think aswell.

Exaile looks interesting, and I've heard good things about Clementine (although may be sluggish as its qt4)

    Any suggestions?

that would depend on what you want it to do that banshee or ryhtmbox isnt doing for you ?

I use ryhtymbox just fine, it wokrs for me cos i want to hear the music and it plays it .

there are many, Amarok is quite popular with some, songbird, audacious, clementine etc etc

try them all or google them to see the features

    Clementine is a great player.
If you're looking for something a little more lightweight, I would recommend Audacious (if you don't mind not having a library). It has a lot of cool themes and it's pretty fast.
If you're still not satisfied, you can try CLI players such as cmus.

    Cheers

I used to use Songbird. It looks very fancy. I liked the way it portrayed cover arts. But the whole screen is a bit cluttered, though, and a bit slow.

    My favorite one is Exaile.

Tried out Banshee now and it's horrible - does not retrieve id3tags properly, crashes on rescanning.

Audacious is also good, especially for playing single files - I use it to listen to radio or downloaded podcasts.

    1. unlike Banshee, it does not have problems with id3 tags and cover art
    2. unlike Exaile, I can operate it with media keys out of the box
    3. unlike Clementine, I can play all mp3 files (Clementine sometimes rejected to play them - don't know why)
    4. unlike Songbird, it is faster and the screen is not so cluttered

And unlike all of those players, it allows some things which I would consider normal but are not (anymore), like updating cover art from my local folders, not by downloading, or the fact that I can also browse my music collection by folders, not only by those stupid tags.

if active development is a criteria, i would stay away from exaile (for now?).
they released a minor bug-fix upgrade several months ago, but other than that, it seems to have gone cold.
pity, because i thought it was the best of the bunch at one time, not so very long ago.

fortunately for you, there seems to be a good crop of new players out there, give em a whirl.

--as for me, i spent some time last year going through all my music and fixing all the tags.
now i use nautilus/totem (+ a few dozen good playlists) as my audio player.
between assigning an "open with totem" command to my folders, and an "enqueue in totem" nautilus action...i aint missin a thing
