    No idea.

I think we should concentrate on just adding the users to Ubuntu. You can add a user (with defaults) like this and follow the prompts (use the same user/pass as in windows)
    Code:
    sudo adduser <user>

    OK, tht's easy.
    Code:
    asjmm@asjmm-saviour:~$ sudo adduser james
    [sudo] password for asjmm:
    Adding user `james' ...
    Adding new group `james' (1001) ...
    Adding new user `james' (1001) with group `james' ...
    Creating home directory `/home/james' ...
    Copying files from `/etc/skel' ...
    Enter new UNIX password:
    Retype new UNIX password:
    passwd: password updated successfully
Changing the user information for james
Enter the new value, or press ENTER for the default
    	Full Name []: James
    	Room Number []:
    	Work Phone []:
    	Home Phone []:
    	Other []:
Is the information correct? [Y/n] y
    asjmm@asjmm-saviour:~$
    I'll do the rest later.

Just go back and use the command to list the Ubuntu users. Then try the command to list the Samba users. You should see all 3 users in both databases.

I have to pop out myself. I will be back in 4 hours (you will be asleep). Post what you have done so I can see it.

This works for finding mortal users (real peoples accounts). Unfortunately some of the /home entries are system users to allow processes to own their own files. See the entry for syslog above. It looks like the mail program you are using created the system user Debian-exim.

I assume that the mortal users in your network are:
    james
    antonia
    alice
    boss
    asjmm

I assume that the strife is Sharon.
    SAMBA
    Code:
    asjmm@asjmm-saviour:~$ cat /etc/passwd | grep /home | cut -d: -f1
    syslog
    usbmux
    saned
    asjmm
    james
    antonia
    alice

The Ubuntu (mortal) users look good. The use of awk to strip the user names from the return is good. You could have used a conditional if to remove the users that had a /home but did not have a /bin/bash shell. See if you can figure that out. You are progressing.

The Samba data should be from the command pdbedit -L. This will have the Samba users after you add them using
    Code:
    smbpasswd -a
Remember to use the same password that is use in the login/pass combo when prompted. Then the user (on either Ubuntu or Windows) and the Samba user login/pass will be the same. I use the same login/pass on all my machines (including the Wireless AP and router admin).

One last thing -- all caps is a WINDOWS thing. Linux folks are lazy -- all lowercase, no spaces and names no longer than need be. Most of my hostnames are 5 characters and the user names are 3 to 5 characters. Its all style, but CAPS SHOUT OUT.

To summarize - We have the Ubuntu users, now we need those users to also be Samba users and for you to list them here.

Re: Invalid command: net rap share list

All I get here is this.
    Code:
    asjmm@asjmm-saviour:~$ pdbedit -L
    tdbsam_open: Failed to open/create TDB passwd [/var/lib/samba/passdb.tdb]
    tdbsam_getsampwnam: failed to open /var/lib/samba/passdb.tdb!
    User Search failed!
    Code:
    asjmm@asjmm-saviour:~$ smbpasswd -a
    When run by root:
        smbpasswd [options] [username]
    otherwise:
        smbpasswd [options]

    options:
-L local mode (must be first option)
      -h print this usage message
-s use stdin for password prompt
-c smb.conf file Use the given path to the smb.conf file
      -D LEVEL debug level
      -r MACHINE remote machine
      -U USER remote username
extra options when run by root or in local mode:
      -a add user
      -d disable user
      -e enable user
      -i interdomain trust account
      -m machine trust account
      -n set no password
-W use stdin ldap admin password
      -w PASSWORD ldap admin password
      -x delete user
      -R ORDER name resolve order
    asjmm@asjmm-saviour:~$

Re: Invalid command: net rap share list

Sorry about that. I figured you would remember tho use sudo.

Pdbedit you always needs sudo to run. So the correct incantation to see a listing of Samba user iss
    Code:
    sudo pdbedit -l
To add a user you should also use sudo and you need to declare the user name. So the correct incantation is
    Code:
    sudo smbpasswd -a <user>
Use the same user/pass that you used when adding them to Ubuntu

It appears that you have not put your name in the smbpasswd database. Add your asjmm account. That is your account; right?

I'm curious: Why did you add the Debian-exim account (a system account) to this Samba suer database? What password did you use?

To remove the Debian-exim entry you came do this
    Code:
    sudo smbpasswd -x Debian-exim
    Post the updated info
    Code:
    sudo pdbedit -L
