the ATI drivers for their gfx cards on linux do not fulfill thier potential, unfortunately. for other games i play I can get really hype gfx on the windows box but not on the linux one pity) However minecraft is not GPU blackhole so potentially not an issue (well, until I want to dl hi-res texpacks heheh).

so I downloaded the purchased game (linux version) from http://www.minecraft.net
I had to set the permissions so that it is executable as a program in properties. right clicked the package and browsed through to run with sun java 6
and omicron it works!!! (so far - im in world that is. may crash yet but hope not) - so maybe try loading the ati drivers on - afraid thats a whole nother hassle but you can get them from
the ati site
