How come I have no dash?

I attached a file of my desktop..

I am a newb to a ubuntu and cannot figure out why I do not have that sidebar thing... or why I have a bar at the bottom. My desktop environment's default looks nothing like the defaults I have seen (aside from the theme change and wallpaper).

Can anyone give me any ideas?

It is called the left launcher... But, still, I do not have it =(

It looks like you're running a standard Gnome desktop; log out, and on the login screen, select "Ubuntu" as the Desktop Manager - it should list it at the bottom. Failing that, go here:

System/Administration/Login Screen Settings

Then change the option at the bottom.

I'm going to hazard a guess at this being a bug, or a compatibility function. What happens if you select "Ubuntu (Safe Mode)".

Anybody have any ideas? could it be the version of 11.04 i downloaded? i downloaded it straight from the ubuntu website... Could this be a bug of some sort? Everytime I have installed ubuntu it has been like this.

You may need to install a proprietary video driver to run Unity , but you should have received a message that your hardware was unsupported .
