Notebook Aspire 5516 - Ubuntu 11.04 Frezze

Installed Ubuntu 11.04 last night on my laptop (Acer Aspire 5516), and it works perfectly as long as an ethernet cable is plugged in. As soon as I unplug the ethernet cable, the system freezes. If I restart the computer without the ethernet cable plugged in, it loads the login screen, but when I try to log in it freezes just before it should load the desktop. I can log in with the cable unplugged to Ubuntu Classic(no effects). I found someone with a similar problem on the ubuntu forums, he said he updated the kernel to 2.6.39.0 and that fixed the problem for him. Not so for me. Any ideas?

I am experiencing this exact same behavior (only works when plugged in, unplugging will cause system to hang. booting to wireless causes system to hang.) -- Acer 5250, Ubuntu 11.04 x86_64

same here to, acer 5250 ubuntu 11.04 x86-64. the 5250 seems to have the same problem in fedora 15 as well

I am experiencing this same problem on my Acer 5250 with 11.10 in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Installing 64-bit 10.04 now and hoping for better results.

12/30/11 update - 10.04 is no better. It doesn't let me have any network connectivity at all, wired or wireless. Ubuntu is useless on this machine.
