Connecting my laptop to my tower hard drive

I would like to connect my laptop (9.10 OS) to my extra tower hard drive (10.04 OS), in order to transfer pictures, files and music. That way nothing is lost as I proceed to upgrade my laptop to 10.04.

Any advice. I have no clue how to do it. I thought connecting a crossover cable would be an easy fix.......Yeeaaah,,,,, Not so much
