    Question Desktop search dead?

    Hello,

I'm trying to find a good desktop search tool. Beagle is dead, Recoll and Strigi are KDE, and Tracker is not many features (can't even search Thunderbird 3). Do I miss something? Is desktop search on Linux dead? Should I use Google Desktop Search instead?

Thanks in advance to point me to the all-in-one-solution,

    Jeroen

"Gnome Do" does some searching. Also Firefox 4 will search all your bookmarks if you type in the address bar

Recoll is not KDE. It has a Qt GUI (no dependance on KDE libs), and will run just fine under Gnome.

    Re: Desktop search dead?

Indeed Beagle is dead (http://www.beagle-project.org/) and Linux search is broken. (There is a workaround read on...) Linux search is built in but it does not work for finding files by content of new file formats. (I mean ODF). Linux built in will happily find files by name, and if the file is .txt or .html by content. It fails to find files by content such as ODT, ODS, OTS, anything from OpenOffice or LibreOffice. That is why I use (embarrassingly) .doc for my documents because Linux can find .doc by content. Yes, I ran away from Windowz only to have to use .doc so that I can find my files by content. I am actually working on a better solution and if/when we will have something (in 2012 Dec), I will make it available. Don't expect too much though, I am busy with other work.

Recoll is alive and kicking. It even offers a Unity Lens
