    Thanks, coffeecat, but my experience dd is an ancient brutal command while there are some protections built into copy....

    Once having the .iso copied, should be able to do a zsync if the USB has enough space for two .iso files. Maybe?

    Brutal or not, dd does a byte by byte copy which is what is needed, whereas cp (I presume you mean cp by "copy") does a file copy, which is of no use in this situation. As fas as I understand it.

    I formatted the /dev/sdd with ext2. This is my 40_custom file:

    Code:
    #!/bin/sh
    exec tail -n +3 $0
    # This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the
    # menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change
    # the 'exec tail' line above.
    menuentry "Ocelot iso" {
    #set isofile="/boot/iso/oneiric-desktop-amd64.iso"
    set isofile="/dev/ssd1"
    #loopback loop (hd2,2)$isofile
    loopback loop (hd3,1)$isofile
    #linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper persistent iso-scan/filename=$isofile
    linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=$isofile noprompt noeject
    initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz
    }
    Have to run now, but likely I'll wait and do a new daily tomorrow. I can see what I've done wrong.

    Thanks for the inputs.

    Hybrid ISO works beautifully.

    You need to make sure that there are no partitions on the USB before dd'ing.

    Will Windows user have to use unetbootin or may be image writer for hybrid images? Why is their no 64 bit AMD version as of daily image?

    ?
    So I took a 2 GB USB stick and made two partitions:

    1 partition Fat32 with boot flag
    1 partition Ext2 labelled casper-rw

    Then did

    #! /bin/bash
    # http://blog.einval.com/2011/01/07#isohybrid_CDs
    df
    echo "check USB device address?"
    echo "is it /dev/sdd1?"
    read temp
    sudo dd if=oneiric-desktop-i386.iso of=/dev/sdd1
    echo "any messages?"
    read temp
    #! exit

    The dd took a while.

    Booted on the USB stick which said:

    isolinux.bin missing or corrupt

    then promptly fell through to usual grub boot on the hard drive.

    Let me try again with format and nothing else on the USB stick.

    Did simple format from Desktop. Did the dd. Booted and got

    missing operating system

    I think I'll go back to my usual copying the .iso and using 40_custom.

    Going forward this process for making a bootable thumb drive is going to save time and be much more efficient for development testers. I just created one using today zsync image with dd and it was faster for me and only required one sudo command. It booted clean as a whistle by the way the stick was fat32 format or raw (as bought). I am a big fan already.. to the devs GOOD ONE Only one partition as stated earlier by Starks ..on a 16GB flash drive -- wasteful huh?

    Okay, no partitions, no sdd1 just sdd formated to FAT32... will give it a try and report back Friday. To format likely requires at least one partition, eh?

    Only one partition... as Starks said. Mine was fast to write.. as I see it..

    By the way you will see no activity in the terminal while the dd is taking place, but if your flash has a light blinking it is working. I made mine while I was working in my Lucid then booted right into the flash drive OO... Extra cool..
