Question can't ssh behind network switch?

this isn't a question about ubuntu as much as a general networking question.

my network is set up as: dsl modem -> wireless router -> netgear prosafe gs108 switch -> desktop

when I have my laptop on the wireless, I can't ssh to the desktop. When I have my laptop plugged into the switch, I can ssh to it just fine. As far as I can tell, the GS108 is an unmanaged switch, so I have no ability to port forward (there's no web interface for the switch at all). When I'm on the wireless, my laptop is on the same sub-net as the desktop (IP addresses are 192.168.1.10[2,3], for instance), and I can ping my desktop, but I just can't ssh to it.

is there any way around this problem?

    thanks in advance!
