Development is done for Gnome 2.32 and support will end for it as well . This is not a Canonical / Ubuntu choice , Gnome is finished with Gnome 2 and has released Gnome 3. This affects every distribution that uses it .
Gnome 2.23 would have to be maintained to be used in future releases, so unless there is a fork or a PPA I don't see this happening , Weather I would like to see in the repository or not .
