    Distribution recommendation needed

    Hey there,

I have recently come into possession of a Dell Inspiron ME051 with a 1.70 GHz processor and 0.99 GB of RAM. Any recommendations on the distribution I should install? It will most be used for word processing and surfing the web, not much else. Any advise would be very appreciated. Cheers.

    Welcome to the forums!

I would go with Maverick (10.10)

If it is intended for long time use without mayor OS changes, it is advisable to use the LTS (Long Term Support) issues, the last one is Lucid (10.04)

That's from me, a fairly old fashioned user. If you like the new "netbook" desktop look, go for Natty (11.04), last official release.

PS. If internet bandwidth is no problem for you, download all three ISOs and do a Live USB test run for all of them.

If you are looking for lighter weight distros, you can always try Xubuntu 11.04 or Lubuntu 11.04. Puppy Linux is another option too.

I agree, but that system can handle 10.10 easily (I also have such a system in a library), maybe even 11.04...

Just give the live CD of the latest version (11.04) a go. If you are lucky with the graphics card you might be able to try out Unity on the live session if not you will start in classic mode (it will look much like Maverick then). If it runs too slow I'd suggest Xubuntu or maybe Lubuntu (although I never used that myself).

If you're feeling up to the small task, try a Debian net-install with XFCE core components. Your Dell will fly!

Ubuntu 10.04 might be a good choice. 11.04 still has some kinks in it from what I've noticed.

10.04 or Scientific 6.0 get my vote.
