    Re: HOWTO: VinDSL Conky Script

I'd like to make suggestion here on the layout of Vindsl conkywx part of conky:

Vindsl template is pretty good, but it's too wide I think for most conky
users, it gives 4 days of forcasts which makes it kind of too wide too fit,
the suggestion is to use only 3 days of forecasts, I mean not a lot of ppl
look 4 days ahead for their forecast, 3 days it a bit more reasonable.
This will make it slimmer and more compact, then it will fit most of the
conkyes out there... In other words, with slimmer wx part the chances that
one would have to decipher and adjust the templet is lower which makes
it a lot more user friendly... So, as is now it's a bit too wide... IMHO
Or it would be nice to have 2 vindsl templets:
    1. with 4 days of forecast - regular
    2. 3 days of forecast - slim

I tried the original paramvir's slim template and could not make it work,
something in there preventing it fitting my conky, however it does work
    from conky-restart script... go figure...

Paramvir, it would be helpful if you a bit more info into Elements table
in your wiki... It's hard to figure out "which" fields show "what"
ie which one is *text font* and which one is *graphics font* ( icon )
so maybe you could include those into the table
else it's harder to decipher the template code.

    Thanks you all !
    Regards.

    Greetings Hallansing

I am not certain where you are looking - have you read the conkywx wiki - elements are in a table format - have always been in a table - and very clear which is image or font.

    https://bitbucket.org/plikhari/conkywx_pub/wiki/Home

Have a read and let me know.

As regards The templates - it is just a matter of placing the elements and some text to define what that element is showing like "Present Condtition: [PC]"

Sometimes copy and paste may not work in conky as there may be other position defining parameters - so you need to check.

As regards vinDSL templates - there is no hard and fast rule - I have a wide screen display and I like 7 day forecast while vin prefers 4 day - you can have as many as look you like - it is what looks good for you - have fun with it

    cheers

    Re: HOWTO: VinDSL Conky Script

Yikes! My internet connection (and telephone) died for 24 hrs -- no broadband, no dial-up, no nothing. ISPs fault, not mine. Sorry!

It's up n' running again, so I've got some catching-up to do...

On a positive note: It gave me a chance to tweak the look n' feel of a dead connection. LoL!

Looked horrible, originally, but I played around with N/A seds (for a couple of hours, no kidding) until Conky output was tolerable.

    Here are the results...

    NO INTERNET CONNECTION

    CONNECTION RESTORED

I know it isn't the most eloquent solution, but it looked like a bomb went off. And, hopefully, most of us don't lose our internet connections all that often.

Basically, I tried many different substitutions for N/A, before settling on "-". The problem was, almost every character is being used by some component in the weather script, and the unescaped forward slash "/" in N/A was creating havoc with the dingbats. An escaped "-" (with some appropriate spacing) caused the least amount of damage to the overall look n' feel, IMO. It's bad enough losing your connection, without having to look at "vomit" on your screen.

Here are the changes (I haven't changed the paths yet)...

    /usr/share/conkywx/examples/wx-wu-vindsl-imperial-weather-seds.sh
    Code:
    ##################################
    ## VinDSL | rev. 12-10-10 22:52 ##
    ##################################
    ## IMPERIAL WEATHER SEDs ##
    ##################################
    sed -e 's/Calm mph'/'\$\{offset 8\}Calm/g' |
    sed -e 's/New Moon'/'\$\{offset -13\}New Moon/g' |

    sed -e 's/N\/A'/'\$\{offset 3\}\-\$\{offset 3\}/g'
    /usr/share/conkywx/examples/wx-wu-vindsl-metric-weather-seds.sh
    Code:
    ##################################
    ## VinDSL | rev. 12-10-10 22:55 ##

    ## METRIC WEATHER SEDs ##

    sed -e 's/New Moon'/'\$\{offset -13\}New Moon/g' |

    sed -e 's/N\/A'/'\$\{offset 3\}\-\$\{offset 3\}/g'

And, all these extra characters necessitated bumping-up the text buffer, in .conkyrc...

    /home/vindsl/.conkyrc
    Code:
    <SNIP>
    ####
    ## This buffer is used for single lines, text, output from $exec, and other variables.
    ## Increasing the 'text_buffer_size' (too high) will drastically reduce Conky's performance.
    ## Decreasing the buffer size (too low) will truncate content and cause strange display output.
    ## Standard text buffer size is 256 bytes (cannot be less). Adjust YOUR buffer wisely!
    ## Tips n' Tricks from dk75:"You don't need to create a 12KiB buffer for every Conky config line."

    Re: HOWTO: VinDSL Conky Script

would sed be more efficient if you did them like this?
    Code:
    sed 's/old/new/g;s/broken/fix/g'
    semi-colon separates sed commands
i think there should be a space between your 5:04 and your PM in your time

But you know we have this mind of ours - and another light bulb just went on.

Since gusts have generally variable wind direction - then instead of showing "N/A" - if it is Calm and gusting - the wind can be shown as variable and if not then N/A - that way if you do not show gusts - you will still make out from the wind arrow that even though it is Calm - it is gusting around.

    What say ???
    Yes, that's another excellent idea!

I just think it should be consistent, e.g. XML & HTML data should generate the same results in Conky, if possible...

Yes, that code (and more) needs to be optimized. I'm just more concerned about banging out a data dump, at the moment. Only so many hours in a day, you know?

After I do a dump, then I can horse around with semi-colons vs single-quotes. As an aside, that calendar code took me 9 tries, over several months, hence the version number.

And, yes, I think a space between the time and abbreviations looks better. At least, that's the way I *feel* today. You can see the spaces in the most recent screenies (above). Jury is still out, on the current time...

    Hi hallansing,
I'll be coming up with more variants, once the dust settles.

For instance, I want to make an expanded version, for use on the left-side of laptop displays.

You have to realize, I don't usually develop scripts this way. This current effort was driven by necessity, when Google turned off their Weather API service, without prior notification.

In a way, this is kind of fun doing all of this in the open. You're seeing warts and all. Normally, most of this communication would be taking place in the background, via PM, IRC, et cetera.

Anyway, you're right. Sometimes less is more. I've done 3-day forecasts in the past, with less info. That would probably be best for netbooks.

    Baby steps, baby steps...

Sorry to disappoint you but me fixee this too - it was a pending thingy thing - so just bit it

Sooooo sed - what sed ???

    NO INTERNET CONNECTION
    Font Based

    Image based

Rest is chugging along fine - trends are trendy

But I feel now sorted out
