How to rip subtitles from AVI?

I have searched the forums and googled and asked, but so far I can't figure out any GNU/Linux-based solutions. Here's my situation:

I have a couple of AVI files with embedded (but NOT hardcoded) subtitle tracks. The way I know that they work is that I'm able to see them when playing with VLC (but not MPlayer) on my Maverick box. I can't see them even when using VLC on a Lucid box.

Since I wanna keep Lucid on my STB, I just wanna rip the subs into SRT files and be done with it (considering that I'm only talking about 3 files there).

Is there a tool that runs on GNU/Linux (bonus points for being in the Ubuntu repos) that will extract the subtitle track from an AVI file (xvid, mpeg4)?

You could go to one of the sites that provide free subtitles & grab the .srt file from them. Which would give you the ability that you want of being able to turn them on/off via vlc.

I usually use these two sites as they don't require me to accept their cookies:

    http://www.moviesubtitles.org/

    http://www.findsubtitles.com/

If they don't have what you want there are plenty of other sites out there, though they will want to lay cookies on you.
